Local, state and federal codes and regulations must be met, any government-required permits obtained and inspections completed before installing or operating your generation equipment.
Emergency generators
Before installing or operating an emergency generator that is not capable of running in parallel with the electric distribution system, please review our information on safely operating portable generators.
Permanently-connected generators
Permanently-connected generators must ...
- meet local, state and federal codes and regulations
- execute a parallel operating agreement contract with Detroit Edison
- meet Detroit Edison guidelines
The guidelines and rate options differ for various types and uses of onsite generation:
- If the generation is not capable of running in parallel with our electric distribution system, but Detroit Edison serves the load normally served by the generation, you must:
- Purchase standby service unless otherwise exempted by order of the Michigan Public Service Commission
- Take supplemental service on the applicable filed rates
-
- For units that are designed to run in parallel with our electric system and sell excess energy to Detroit Edison at contracted rates, you must:
- File an application to interconnect with Detroit Edison
- Enter into a parallel operating agreement with Detroit Edison
- Purchase standby service unless otherwise exempted by order of the Michigan Public Service Commission (Exemptions are provided for dispersed generation, some renewable generation under 30kW and distributed generation)
- Take supplemental service on an appropriate filed rates and riders
- Obtain qualifying status from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This can be done on line at http://www.ferc.gov/industries/electric/gen-info/qual-fac/self-cert.asp
- Enter into a purchase power agreement with Detroit Edison
-
- Units that produce power using renewable resources, such as solar photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, biomass, hydro and on-farm anaerobic digestion systems, may qualify to receive Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). RECs represent verification that some quantity of renewable energy with environmental attributes was produced. RECs can be sold. The owner of RECs can claim to have used the environmental attributes of the renewable energy even if the actual power was used or sold to another party. Consequently, any facility producing RECs can enter into an agreement to sell RECs.
- For all other units that are designed to run in parallel with the electric system, you must:
- File an application to interconnect with Detroit Edison
- Enter into a parallel operating agreement with Detroit Edison
- Purchase standby service unless otherwise exempted by order of the Michigan Public Service Commission (Exemptions are provided for dispersed generation, some renewable generation under 30kW and distributed generation)
- Take supplemental service on an appropriate filed rates and riders
