Energy Efficiency Rebates

The three following rebate programs are currently available for MichCon gas customers.

These are introductory programs, so the number of rebates available are limited.  Rebates will be awarded on a first come-first serve basis to qualified applicants.

We plan to offer an expanded rebate program for both MichCon and Detroit Edison customers pending successful future energy efficiency legislation by the state legislature and Michigan Public Service Commission.

Rebates High-Efficiency Natural Gas Furnace Rebate

The single largest variable in how much it costs to heat your house could be your old furnace. Waiting to replace it until it fails could be costing you hundreds of dollars a year in higher heating costs. Replace that furnace now with a modern, high-efficiency natural gas furnace and you’ll reap the benefits for years to come.

Furnace replacement is a major investment. To help off-set the additional cost of purchasing a higher-efficiency furnace, MichCon will provide 200 homeowners with rebates of $250 each. The new furnace must have an efficiency rating of at least 93% and be installed by a licensed mechanical contractor.

Rebates Energy Audit Rebate Incentive

Home owners are flooded with information about products and services that make claims of substantial energy savings. But which products or services are the best for your house?

Start by having a professional Home Energy Analysis. An energy auditor will come to your home to make a thorough analysis, discuss options and provide you with a detailed report about the products and/or services that offer the best economic advantage for your specific house and lifestyle.

To help encourage more homeowners to hire professional energy auditors and follow through with some of their recommendations, MichCon will rebate $250 of the audit cost.

To qualify for this rebate, you must be an existing customer of MichCon and live in a house built prior to December 31, 1999. Rebates are limited to the first 100 homeowners who complete an application stating they had the Energy Audit and took action based on audit recommendations.

Rebates ENERGY STAR® New House Rebate

To encourage energy efficient building practices, MichCon will give six licensed builders a one-time grant of $5,000 each to build and demonstrate an all natural gas ENERGY STAR house. While an ENERGY STAR home costs slightly more to build than a standard model, it pays back that cost premium quickly through its energy efficiency. A new house built to ENERGY STAR standards will use as much as 50% less energy than a similar new house built to the Code minimums.

The new house must be built in 2008/2009 and served by MichCon natural gas. It must also be inspected and tested by a Home Energy Rater to verify that the house meets EPA’s guidelines for energy efficiency.
