As a regulated gas utility, MichCon buys and stores gas for customer use and delivers it to homes and businesses as needed. The price you pay MichCon for gas supply is regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission and is dependant on the price we pay for gas on the open market. We do not make a profit on gas supply.
Gas Choice is a voluntary program open to all customers. This voluntary program gives you the option to purchase your gas supply from an Alternative Gas Supplier (AGS). By choosing an Alternative Gas Supplier (AGS), you have the choice to purchase your gas at the unregulated prices offered by the AGSs.
Alternative Gas Suppliers may approach you about the Gas Choice program. If you would like to switch to one of these alternative suppliers, you may enroll with them. If you wish to remain with MichCon, there is nothing you need to do. MichCon will continue to be your gas supplier.
In order to switch your gas supply to an AGS, you will need to provide that supplier with your DTE Energy gas account number. The gas account number is located on the monthly bill you receive from us. Do not provide your account number to an AGS if you do not wish to switch.
If you enroll with an AGS over the telephone, the supplier must send you a copy of the contract within seven days. Once you have received the contract, residential and small commercial customers with annual usage of 2,000 Ccf or less may still cancel as long as they do so within 30 days of the day they agreed to the service. This 30-day unconditional cancellation right does not apply to commercial customers with annual usage in excess of 2,000 Ccf, unless so specified within the AGS’ contract.
If you choose an AGS, that company will supply your gas at a price agreed upon by you and the AGS. Regardless of who supplies your gas, MichCon will continue to deliver the gas to your home or business, read meters, administer billing and respond to all emergencies and leaks.
